Which Mattress Pad is for You?
Mattress pads are the newest thing to hit the bedding industry. Not only do they provide increased comfort and support, some even provide hygienic maintenance, increased bedding softness, joint support, and hypoallergenic aid. It is important to understand the differences between them so you can make the best mattress pad purchase to adequately suit your needs.
The essential benefit you'll gain out of adding a mattress pad to your current mattress is an added boost of comfort or support without having to front all the cash necessary for a brand new mattress. If your mattress is too soft for you now, a firmer mattress pad can add support. Similarly, if you find your current mattress to be too firm, a softer pad can add a luxurious and softer feel to your current bedding. Here's a rundown of some popular mattress toppers, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type:
Memory Foam
If you tend to move a lot in your sleep, a memory foam style mattress pad is your best bet. These mattress pads conform to your body shape, allowing for minimal movement as you transfer your weight while you sleep. An added benefit to the Memory Foam Mattress pad is that they help to regulate your body temperature, so you won't become overly hot or cold in bed. Memory Foam pads, while good for the restless sleeper, are notorious for losing elasticity over time. They are also very difficult to clean. For people with bad allergenic problems, these pads are a great option as they tend to not collect the dust that more traditional mattress pads can accumulate over time. That said, if you're allergic to latex, a memory foam pad may not be feasible, as these pads are predominately made out of latex.
Latex Foam
An alternative to the more expensive memory foam is the latex-styled mattress pad. Latex foam pads have many of the same advantages and disadvantages as memory foam. The difference in Latex foam pads is that they don't have the same unusual smell that memory foam carries. Similar to memory foam, latex pads naturally resist most allergens. This makes them a great option for those who need a mattress pad that will not accumulate the allergens that commonly infest most bedding products.
Feather and Down
For a softer mattress pad style, consider the feather and down varieties of mattress padding. These pads provide a soft and Cozy Top great for firmer mattress styles. This makes feather Top Mattress pads perfect for those looking for added cushioning in their bedding styles and types. Disadvantages to this goose filled mattress pad include a general lack of support and a material that can flatten easily.
Wool
Similar to the feather and down style mattress pads, wool mattress pads provide a softer layer above firmer mattresses. Wool mattress pads come in a variety of wool styles, including lamb's wool, alpaca wool, and even some synthetic wool materials. Different wool mattress pads have different pricing schemes based on the quality of the wool pad that you purchase. Wool mattress pads tend to flatten easily. They also lack the necessary support of the Latex, or Memory style of pad.
